In the last&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.a-stw.com\/en\/multilingual-countries-italy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\"><strong>episode<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/a>we talked about the various bilingual regions of Italy. Today we\u2019ll take a look at our cousins beyond the Alps, in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before embarking on our linguistic excursion, I must make a premise: the only official language of France is French.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in 2008 the country&#8217;s Parliament conducted a constitutional review, according to which so-called \u201c<strong>regional or minority languages<\/strong>\u201d are recognised. These languages are not regarded as official languages, although they are fairly widespread in the country. Nevertheless, the government grants them the status of minority languages recognised at the administrative level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axl.cefan.ulaval.ca\/francophonie\/Rapport-Cerquiglini-1999.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">report<\/span><\/strong> <\/a>written in 1999, the French linguist&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bernard_Cerquiglini\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">Bernard Cerquiglini<\/span><\/strong><\/a> identified 75 minority languages that could be ratified, of which 24 are spoken within the European borders of the State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will clearly only discuss some of the minority languages present in the report, more specifically: <strong>Occitan<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Langues d\u2019oil<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Corsican<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Breton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>OCCITAN<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Occitan contains a variety of dialects spoken mainly in Southern France, but also, for example, in Catalonia where Aranese (a variant of Occitan) is the official language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was originally called&nbsp;<em>Lenga d\u2019oc<\/em>, from the Occitan word \u201coc\u201d which means \u201cyes\u201d, or&nbsp;<em>Proven\u00e7al<\/em>. However, in the 20th century the term &#8220;Occitan\u201d or \u201cOccitan language\u201d was confirmed, while the term \u201cProven\u00e7al\u201d began to define only the spoken Occitan language used in Provence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The six main Occitan dialects are&nbsp;<strong>Gascon<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Languedocien<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Limousin<\/strong>,<strong> Auvergnat<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Proven\u00e7al<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Vivaro-Alpine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, click&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Occitan_language#Usage_in_France.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">here<\/span><\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LANGUES D\u2019O\u00cfL<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term &#8220;langues d\u2019o\u00efl\u201d often refers to the linguistic family, within the Gallo-Romance languages, derived from ancient (or medieval) French, to which the French language belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The languages originally spoken in Northern France were identified as langues d&#8217;o\u00efl to distinguish them from the Lenga d&#8217;oc of Southern France. To date, &#8220;langues d&#8217;o\u00efl\u201d refers to all the dialects derived from medieval French, mainly present in the north of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information, click&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Langues_d%27o%C3%AFl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">here<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CORSICAN<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How many of you have noticed while on holiday on the beautiful island of Corsica that the road signs are bilingual (French and Corsican), and how many Italians have noticed the similarities in the islanders\u2019 spoken language with the Italian dialects?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Corsican is a minority language of France whose origins are identified in spoken Tuscan, Sardinian and Genoese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three varieties of Corsican in Corsica: Northern Corsican, Southern Corsican and the dialect of the so-called transition area. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>BRETON<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainly spoken in Brittany, this language&#8217;s origins are in the UK. There are also many bilingual road signs in this region in the north-west of France. French law prohibits the use of only Breton, which must always be accompanied by French. Nonetheless, the Breton language agency Ofis Publik ar Brezhoneg founded in 1999 to promote the daily use of Breton has set up a campaign to encourage businesses, organisations and municipalities to use the language for their communications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>LINGUISTIC HERITAGE, FRANCE AND BEYOND<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world increasingly geared towards globalisation, with increasingly similar customs in different countries, linguistic peculiarities should be protected and safeguarded.
