April is the month of engines<\/strong>! We\u2019re not talking about Formula 1 or MotoGP, and we\u2019re not even talking about spring – which by the way has officially arrived – and its customary trips out of town. Today we\u2019re talking about engines in the context of our column \u201cAnniversaries of the first patents<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u201d: an overview of the most famous and important patents registered throughout history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cWhat do engines have to do with that?\u201d Well, you\u2019ll see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1 APRIL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll the skip the April Fools\u2019 jokes and dive in with the first patent we\u2019ll be looking at today. In 1826, the American inventor Samuel Morey<\/strong> invented, developed and patented the first internal combustion engine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The invention took advantage of the vapours emitted by turpentine and ethanol, developing motive power from the elements\u2019 combustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 APRIL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s skip ahead to 1885, the year in which German-born engineer and entrepreneur Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler<\/strong> designed his prototype of the petrol engine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considered one of the fathers of the automotive industry, Daimler and his friend Maybach <\/strong>designed a prototype of a small petrol engine and developed a two-wheeled means of transport capable of harnessing the engine\u2019s motive power, an impressive 2.5 HP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Daimler Reitrad-Einspur<\/strong> is considered the first motorbike<\/strong> (with petrol engine) in history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

23 APRIL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Continuing with the theme of engine history, April is a big month!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of Italy\u2019s most iconic vehicles worldwide<\/strong> was born on 23 April 1946.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A company from Pontedera<\/strong> filed the patent that was destined to change the history of two-wheelers. In fact, the \u201cmotorbike with a rational complex of members and elements with a frame combined with mudguards and bonnet covering the entire mechanical part\u201d was patented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019re talking about the legendary Piaggio Vespa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LASTLY, 25 <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We\u2019ll end on a high note with two patents in a single date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still on the topic of engines, in 1769 the famous Scottish engineer James Watt<\/strong> filed a patent application in English for \u201cWatt\u2019s method for reducing steam and fuel in the steam engine\u201d. This invention modified Newcomen\u2019s steam engine<\/strong>, improving its performance and optimising the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest invention instead takes us away from engines, fuels and means of locomotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1961, Robert Noyce<\/strong> – the entrepreneur nicknamed \u201cMayor of Silicon Valley<\/strong>\u201d and founder of Intel – invented, developed and filed a patent for the first integrated circuit<\/strong>: the essential component of every computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
